Rail Riding Rules? Why 35% of Indonesians Prefer Trains

Train travel leads Indonesia’s public commute at 35%, valued for comfort, consistency, and speed. Jakarta’s MRT handled over 40.8 million riders in 2024, with an average daily ridership of ~111,500. The integrated Greater Jakarta Mass Transit System—including KRL, MRT, LRT, Transjakarta bus, and airport rail—reported 788 million annual riders in 2024, up from 654.6 million in 2023.

Expanding the Future MRT Network

Government plans include constructing an MRT extension from Bekasi to western Jakarta. This means a 25 km extension financed by a ~$1 billion loan from Japan, slated to finish by 2031. Meanwhile, the Jakarta-Bandung high‑speed rail, launched in late 2023, has already carried over 6 million passengers during its first full year in 2024. The government also aims to lay over 1,700 km of new and reactivated rail lines by 2024.

To further relieve congestion and grow market share beyond its current 35%, authorities are purchasing 37 new commuter trainsets by 2027. They include 24 domestic KRL sets and imports from China, with a projected investment of nearly IDR 9 trillion (~US$600 million).

As cities grow denser and more diverse, this push in rail infrastructure directly addresses commuter dissatisfaction with road traffic. We’ve heard of cases where car speeds drop to just 15 km/h in rush hours, creating bottleneck areas that contribute to more traffic. By reinforcing rail infrastructure, it becomes an appealing option over private vehicles.
