How B3 Waste Mirrors Manufacturing Trends in Indonesia

Indonesia’s hazardous waste (B3) generation pattern between 2021 and 2024 reveals a compelling narrative that parallels the country’s industrial activity. From 2021 to 2023, hazardous waste volumes climbed steadily from 68.6 million tons to 83.5 million tons, a 10.3% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). This spike aligned closely with the manufacturing sector’s expansion, which remains the primary contributor to B3 waste.

A Turning Point for Hazardous Waste Production

Bar graph illustrating Indonesia's hazardous waste production from 2021 to 2024, showing an increase in waste generation.

However, 2024 marked a dramatic departure. Hazardous waste plummeted to just 11.47 million tons, resulting in a negative CAGR of -0.3% when viewed over the full four-year period. This decline directly mirrored the slight contraction in Indonesia’s manufacturing GDP, which dipped by -0.2%. It highlights how intimately industrial output is tied to environmental byproducts.

These fluctuations offer a stark reminder of how economic shifts impact ecological footprints. As factories scale operations up or down, the waste they generate adjusts accordingly. For policymakers and environmental advocates, this presents both a challenge and an opportunity. Efforts to decouple industrial growth from waste generation are more crucial than ever.

Moreover, the data emphasizes the need for responsive waste management infrastructure. Capacity planning must anticipate economic booms and busts, ensuring preparedness regardless of the trend.
