This 107.4% growth over three years underscores not just a rebound, but a strong resurgence powered by strategic efforts across government and private sectors.

The Role of MICE in Shaping the Tourism Sector in Indonesia

One of the unsung heroes behind Indonesia’s impressive tourism rebound in 2024 is the MICE sector—Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions. This industry, which was virtually shut down during the pandemic, has now returned stronger than ever, playing a pivotal role in attracting 13.9 million international tourists this year.

Cities like Jakarta and Bali have led this revival of the tourism sector in Indonesia. Jakarta, as the country’s economic and political hub, boasts some of Southeast Asia’s largest convention centers, such as the Jakarta International Expo (JIExpo) and Jakarta Convention Center. These venues hosted a wide range of events in 2024, from international trade expos to tech conferences.

Bali, known globally for its leisure tourism, has successfully positioned itself as a MICE destination as well. Facilities such as the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center are now favored for hosting international corporate events, incentive travel programs, and even global summits.

These events do more than just fill hotel rooms. They generate spillover effects across hospitality, F&B, transportation, and retail. MICE travelers also tend to have higher spending power and longer stays, contributing significantly to the local economy.

Indonesia’s MICE-friendly policies, such as streamlined visa processes and infrastructure upgrades, have further cemented the reputation of the tourism sector in Indonesia as a preferred destination for global business events. As the world embraces in-person connections once more, Indonesia is ready—and thriving—as a key MICE hub in Asia.
