What 39.3M Passengers Say About Indonesia’s International Aviation

In 2024, Indonesia welcomed a strong resurgence in international travel. With 39.3 million international passengers, the country has reaffirmed its position as a major air travel hub in Southeast Asia.

A Surge in International Travel

The top four airports—Jakarta (Soekarno-Hatta), Bali (Ngurah Rai), Surabaya (Juanda), and Medan (Kualanamu)—accounted for 89.2% of total traffic, with Jakarta alone contributing 16.5 million travelers. The average monthly international traffic reached 2.9 million, displaying clear seasonal spikes, with August, July, September, October, and December:

  • August led with 3.3M passengers, driven by music festivals and international events like the Singapore Grand Prix.
  • September was boosted by MotoGP Mandalika and overseas concerts.
  • December benefited from holiday travel, Djakarta Warehouse Project, and the Amazing Thailand Marathon.

These patterns reveal a shift in how Indonesians and tourists plan trips that align with event calendars, rather than just traditional holidays. The resulting demand spikes influence airline scheduling, tourism services, and hotel occupancy rates.

As Indonesia looks ahead to 2025, the air travel outlook is optimistic. Diversification beyond Jakarta and Bali, improved airport infrastructure, and stronger regional ties can further accelerate growth.

The numbers aren’t just impressive, but they also represent people reconnecting, exploring, and contributing to Indonesia’s broader economic revival.
